▸Why does my iPhone save photos as HEIC?

iOS uses HEIC because it produces files about half the size of JPGs at the same quality. The trade-off is that older software, MLS systems, and some websites do not accept HEIC.

▸Can I make my iPhone take JPGs by default?

Yes — Settings → Camera → Formats → "Most Compatible". That switches the camera to JPG. New photos will be JPG; existing HEIC photos still need converting (with this tool).

▸Will the JPG look as good as the HEIC?

For most photos the JPG is visually identical at our default quality (88). The file size will be roughly 1.5–2× larger, which is the cost of universal compatibility.

▸Are my photos kept on your server?

No. Files are processed in memory and discarded immediately after the JPG is returned to you.
